Rabies Virus Antibody Screen (RFFIT) – Equine
The Rabies Virus Antibody Endpoint Titer test, performed using the Rapid Fluorescent Focus Inhibition Test (RFFIT), is a quantitative assay designed to measure rabies virus-neutralizing antibodies in equine serum. This test is the gold standard for evaluating a horse’s immune response to rabies vaccination or exposure to the rabies virus.The RFFIT measures the ability of the antibodies in the horse’s serum to neutralize the rabies virus and prevent its replication in cell culture. This test is particularly useful for confirming an adequate immune response following rabies vaccination, ensuring compliance with international travel or export requirements, and evaluating the rabies antibody status of at-risk horses in endemic areas.

Collection Guidelines
- Collect an adequate amount of blood in a plain red-top tube or serum separator tube (yellow-top tube). Allow it to clot at room temperature for 30 to 60 minutes before separation.
- Centrifuge to separate the serum. Transfer the clear serum into a new, leak-proof plain red-top tube and label it as “serum.”
- Excessively hemolyzed samples are not suitable for this test.
- Unspun samples will not be accepted.
- Refrigerate sample at 4oC until shipment.

Packing Instructions
Label each sample with the animal’s name and a unique identifier, using a permanent marker or a secure adhesive label. Ensure the submittal form is completed with the animal’s information and relevant medical history.
