Thyroid Panel – Feline

The Feline Thyroid Panel is a specialized diagnostic test that includes measurements of T3, T4, and free T4 by equilibrium dialysis (FT4-ED). This panel is particularly useful for evaluating thyroid function in cats, especially in cases where clinical signs of hyperthyroidism are present, but initial T4 levels appear within normal ranges. By assessing multiple thyroid hormones, this panel provides a more comprehensive understanding of thyroid activity, helping to identify cases of early or mild hyperthyroidism that may be missed with T4 testing alone. The inclusion of FT4-ED increases diagnostic sensitivity, allowing for accurate diagnosis and effective management of thyroid disorders in feline patients.

Collection Guidelines

1. Collect an adequate amount of blood in a plain red-top tube or serum separator tube (yellow-top tube). Allow it to clot at room temperature for 30 to 60 minutes before separation.
2. Centrifuge to separate the serum. Transfer the clear serum into a new, leak-proof plain red-top tube and label it as “serum.”
3. Excessively hemolyzed samples are not suitable for this test.
4. Unspun samples will not be accepted.
5. Refrigerate sample at 4oC until shipment.

Packing Instructions

Label each sample with the animal’s name and a unique identifier, using a permanent marker or a secure adhesive label. Ensure the submittal form is completed with the animal’s information and relevant medical history.
