Cryptosporidium & Giardia Panel (rtPCR)
The Cryptosporidium & Giardia Panel (rtPCR) utilizes real-time polymerase chain reaction (rtPCR) to detect the DNA of Cryptosporidium and Giardia, two protozoan parasites that cause gastrointestinal illness in animals and pose zoonotic risks. Cryptosporidium primarily infects the intestinal lining, causing malabsorption and diarrhea, while Giardia targets the small intestine, leading to malodorous, intermittent diarrhea and nutrient absorption issues. The high sensitivity of rtPCR allows for detection even at low levels, making this panel particularly valuable in cases of persistent gastrointestinal symptoms and assessing zoonotic transmission potential.

Collection Guidelines
- Ideally, fecal samples should be taken directly from the rectum. If samples are collected from the ground, they should be taken from the surface of a freshly deposited stool.
- An appropriate sample size is 5g in a leak proof sterile container.
- Preferably submit the sterile container in a zip-locktype plastic bag

Packing Instructions
Label each sample with the animal’s name and a unique identifier, using a permanent marker or a secure adhesive label. Ensure the submittal form is completed with the animal’s information and relevant medical history.
