Copper (ICP/MS)
Copper measurement using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP/MS) is a highly accurate and sensitive diagnostic technique for assessing copper levels in small animals, such as dogs and cats. Copper is a critical trace mineral involved in numerous physiological functions, including the formation of connective tissue, iron metabolism, melanin synthesis, and enzymatic antioxidant defense. Imbalances in copper levels—either deficiency or toxicity—can lead to significant health issues in small animals.Copper deficiency may result in anemia, neurological disorders, compromised immune function, and poor coat pigmentation. Conversely, copper toxicity, particularly common in breeds prone to copper storage diseases (e.g., Bedlington Terriers, Doberman Pinschers), can lead to hepatic damage, jaundice, and gastrointestinal signs. The ICP/MS method allows precise quantification of copper concentrations in serum samples.. This test is especially valuable for monitoring at-risk breeds, assessing the impact of dietary changes, and diagnosing unexplained hepatic or systemic disorders.

Collection Guidelines
- Collect an adequate amount of blood in a plain red-top tube or serum separator tube (yellow-top tube). Allow it to clot at room temperature for 30 to 60 minutes before separation.
- Centrifuge to separate the serum. Transfer the clear serum into a new, leak-proof plain red-top tube and label it as “serum.”
- Excessively hemolyzed samples are not suitable for this test.
- Unspun samples will not be accepted.
- Refrigerate sample at 4oC until shipment.

Packing Instructions
Label each sample with the animal’s name and a unique identifier, using a permanent marker or a secure adhesive label. Ensure the submittal form is completed with the animal’s information and relevant medical history.
