von Willebrand Factor (vWF) concentration – Equine

The von Willebrand Factor (vWF) concentration test measures the level of vWF in equine plasma, providing critical insights into coagulation function and the horse’s ability to form stable blood clots. vWF is a glycoprotein essential for platelet adhesion to damaged blood vessel walls, playing a pivotal role in the coagulation cascade. Deficiencies or abnormalities in vWF can result in prolonged bleeding, particularly during surgeries, injuries, or invasive procedures. This test is particularly useful in diagnosing von Willebrand disease (vWD), a hereditary bleeding disorder, and in assessing horses with unexplained bleeding tendencies. It is also a valuable pre-surgical test to evaluate coagulation status, especially in breeds or individuals predisposed to bleeding disorders.
