von Willebrand Factor (vWF) concentration

The von Willebrand Factor (vWF) concentration test measures the level of vWF in equine plasma, providing critical insights into coagulation function and the horse's ability to form stable blood clots. vWF is a glycoprotein essential for platelet adhesion to damaged blood vessel walls, playing a pivotal role in the coagulation cascade. Deficiencies or abnormalities in vWF can result in prolonged bleeding, particularly during surgeries, injuries, or invasive procedures. This test is particularly useful in diagnosing von Willebrand disease (vWD), a hereditary bleeding disorder, and in assessing horses with unexplained bleeding tendencies. It is also a valuable pre-surgical test to evaluate coagulation status, especially in breeds or individuals predisposed to bleeding disorders.

2 ml Citrate Plasma

  • Collect the appropriate volume of blood till the markings provided in 3.8% citrate tube (blue-top tube)

  • Centrifuge for 10-15 minutes to separate the plasma. Transfer the clear plasma into a new, leak-proof plain blue-top tube and label it as "Citrate Plasma."

  • Excessively hemolyzed samples are not suitable for this test.

  • Unspun samples will not be accepted.

  • Refrigerate sample at 4oC until shipment.

  • Label each sample with the animal’s name and a unique identifier, using a permanent marker or a secure adhesive label

  • Ensure the submittal form is completed with the animal’s information and relevant medical history.
